Description

A new generation of retro gaming is here! ANBERNIC take the stage with their newest retro gaming handheld, the ANBERNIC RG552.

The RG552 is powered by a RockChip RK3399 SoC. This SoC boasts a hexa-core processor that runs at up to speeds of 1.8GHz, and a Mali-T860 GPU. The RG552 also features 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM. Play more retro games at higher resolutions and stabler framerates than ever before!

Storage is also no longer an issue with the RG552! With built-in 64GB eMMC 5.1, and the option to use not one, but TWO microSD cards, you can effortlessly manage your game collections.

New to the RG line is the inclusion of a 10-point touch screen with a whopping 1920×1152 IPS display. This goes perfectly with the new Android 11 operating system, which grants you access to tons of free community developed emulators and apps. For those who do not like Android, it is also possible to boot into alternative operating systems via microSD card as well.

For the first time in ANBERNIC’s history, the RG552 is a retro gaming handheld with active cooling. The inclusion of a fan and heatsink means this gaming handheld will stay ultra-cool when emulating the most demanding games out there.

Even the battery life has been extended! Two 3200mAh batteries allow for hours of gaming on the go without a need to recharge.

All of this is wrapped up in ANBERNIC’s signature lightweight plastic shell with dual analogue sticks and a full suite of face and shoulder buttons, for ergonomic comfort and ease of use.

Best handheld to date

Love this device. Screen is amazing and so far have not loved a handheld console more (apart from my switch)

It's great, but...

Performance is impressive, Saturn, Dreamcast and PSP play well, but ergonomics are questionable. Reaching L2 while using the left stick is almost impossible.
My biggest issue is with build quality. It initially seemed great, but then after one day, R1 failed. On opening the device, I found spacers had been stuck to the bottom of the trigger, to make contact with the microswitch. The one on the right had come unstuck, so no contact was being made. This is shockingly poor in a device that costs so much and if they're all made this way, I'd say it's a serious issue.
Granted, I fixed it with some superglue, but after 1 day... I really shouldn't have to. And sure, I could've sent it back.... but again, I shouldn't have to.
So in conclusion, when it works, I love it, but unless Anbernic sort out their quality control and production standards, I'd hesitate to recommend buying one.
To be clear, my issue is with Anbernic, and not DroiX, who I'm always very impressed with.

Could be great but poor software has really let this down

At time of release, and still to this day, the software for this device is poor. Anbernic has basically left this up to the community to fix, without any support from them. The provided Android distribution (when no OS sd card inserted), is old and buggy, and the provided version of Batocera is also old and buggy. I have ended up using a beta version of 351elec, which is also buggy (being in beta), but less buggy than the provided one, and I know it's being worked on, unlike Anberinc's build of Batocera. Don't expect this device to work anywhere near as good as the RG351 product line, and if you purchase now, it may be several months before a stable OS is released, then it should be able to beat the RG351 line in performance.

All that aside, I do like the hardware, it's a nice build quality, albeit with awkwardly placed shoulder buttons. Expect to be able to play the following very well (when software is fixed)

Gameboy
NES
Genesis / Megadrive
Gameboy Advance
SNES
PS1
Nintendo DS
N64
MAME / Arcade

Everything above those systems you should expect to have a mixed experience with.

Great console. Easy to use

Great console. Easy to use out of the box and you can add games on the memory card. Plays all emulators smoothly and the controls are responsive and really comfortable to use. Good build quality and has a fan for cooling. Really good purchase. Many thanks. Prompt delivery as well.

RG552 - Anbernic XL

For those who have enjoyed the recent handhelds from Anbernic, the RG552 is the latest and certainly the largest. It represents the first time Anbernic have tried to develop a handheld using a chipset not already used by another manufacturer so while it is a power upgrade from previous models, it might not be seen as a total generational leap. It's better to treat it almost as an XL version of their previous modles in my opion. Granted I've been using it as a Linux device rather than an Android one (using 351ELEC betas), as that is what I have been using previously, so I can't vouch for Android performance. The upgraded high resolution screen is very nice and in general performance is a step above what was previously obtainable.

In summary this console might not be an totally essential purchase, so it's worth looking into it before purchase, but you should have no regrets in buying one :)

Great screen. DPAD not as good as other Anbernic devices.

Screen is amazing. DPad not as good as other Anbernic devices unfortunately. I have multiple devices from them and am a Street Fighter fanatic and this dpad doesn’t live up to the 351V where I never miss a dragon punch. Still great for everything else including NeoGeo games but definitely took me a week to get used to Street Fighter. Built-in Firmware is buggy but great once you tinker a bit. Big plus for me that Batocera is working on firmware for this as that’s what I use for my PC. Runs hot and battery life isn’t great. Sounds like a lot of negatives but I actually really like this device. Just wish dpad was as good as their other products.

Great little system but not perfect....

I upgraded from a RG351m (I hesitated alot before I jumped in). So far, it has played everything I have tested - from 8bit to Saturn and it plays great. I tried Crisis Core on the PSP and it plays much better - I havent bothered with God of War as I hear this still runs rough.

So far, it is great but it has a few annoyances which the RG351 is better and it is all around the function key. The volume button doesnt work with some emulators and they default to loud!! PSP for examples requires function and L1 to turn the volume down - why not just use the volume button??? I had to research this. Some others require function and up/down for volume so there is no consistency.

I am sure I will get used to it - just a little annoying at the moment.

RG552

Great dual boot system, I’ve had a few Anbernic devices now and as usual, their build quality is fantastic although the software is typical Anbernic, once custom firmware is released by the community then this will purr. This is the most powerful system they’ve released so far and the screen is incredible, I’ve tried everything from 8-bit to Dreamcast and the graphics pop and the games play smooth thanks to the higher spec chip. The only criticism is that I wished they used stacked trigger buttons instead of their familiar side by side design but apart from that, another great system from Anbernic.
