The RG353M is the ultimate handheld gaming console with high performance and reliability all contained in a stylish aluminium alloy case.

The RG353M handheld gaming console features the RK3566 quad core Cortex-A55 CPU that runs up to 1.8GHz. There is 2GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 32GB of internal eMMC 5.1 storage for Android 11 OS. The Linux OS comes on its own 16GB card. There is a second card that is 64GB which is used for the game files storage.

The RG353M measures only 5.07 x 2.7 x 0.62 inches (14.5 x 7.05 x 1.59 cm) and weighs 232 grams. Despite it having an aluminum alloy case it remains very light to carry. The handheld gaming console is extremely portable, fitting into a jacket pocket or small bag

The handheld gaming console has a 3.5” IPS multi touch screen with a 640*480 screen resolution which is perfect for retro gaming. On the RG353M are the usual gaming controls including dual analogue sticks and gaming buttons for pixel perfect precision and 3D accuracy. There is also a function button which depending on the OS used, will bring up the in-emulator menu or return to the home screen.

The Linux OS runs a combination of Emulation Station and RetroArch to provide a wealth of gaming options on many classic game’s consoles from the 1970’s to more modern day on the RG353M. The Android OS requires some setting up but ultimately provides a wider range of computers and consoles to relive the classics on. You can also go the third route by installing a custom firmware on a SD card to use on the handheld gaming console which provides over 90 classic systems to choose from!

The RG353M features WiFI so you can connect online with compatible games and systems to play two player games online. There is also mini-HDMI output to connect the handheld gaming console to the TV and game on a larger screen. You can also use it on Android to install any apps you download over the internet.

Ambernic RG353M

The product Ambernic RG353M arrived in good shape. It was firmly wrapped. In my short user experience I got to say a 5/5 product! It also came with a 64Gb sd card with lots of pre-installed games. A great purchase!

Buying from Droix was easy and shipping was only 7 days.

Great but expensive retro handheld

There’s a couple bugs with the initial os, booting into retroarch for example will (regardless of input settings inside or out of retroarch) assign dpad up and dpad left to analogue, you have to go into retroarch input and reassign the dpad every time to stop the bug, most likely a custom os will solve this issue as I think it’s pulling from the front end settings but I haven’t checked.

That aside the device itself is pretty sturdy and feels well made, buttons are nice and springy although the dpad does rock a little too easy right and left when pressing up or down, it’s not quite ergonomic in my hands (average adult sized) so perhaps the 353p will rest in your hands longer before the start cramping up, I had to rest my pinky underneath the device when playing for support and it hurts after awhile. While I appreciate the top class magnetic analogue sticks it wasn’t as smooth or comfortable as most modern controllers, I’d place them above switch native but below my switch hori split pad pro, far below an xbox or ps4 controller however.

The screen protector didn’t take long before it peeled off but even without it the screen is nice, good colour temp and scales well with older games tho some text is hard to read unless integer scaling. Speakers are not the best but better than expected given the size and WiFi did a good enough job scraping for media.

The price tho, which has like everything else been going up considerably doesn’t really sit well with me, about £120 would be the max on reflection I would have paid had I tried it out beforehand. I would consider if only for the possibly better form factor the RG353p

Almost perfect mobile retro station

Excellent build quality and ergonomics are perfect for d-pad, 4:3 games so ideal for 80-90 arcade games and home consoles. PSX and Dreamcast runs well for most titles but N64/PSP games are hit and miss (even with dedicated emulator on Android).
Analog sticks are very good for short ones (smooth and precise) but badly placed to me.
Emulation of more 'exotic' devices like DS or Atari ST/Amiga/ScummVM also shows that external controllers such a mouse and keyboard aren't a luxury.
HMDI output and second controller (wired or bluetooth) works well and can turn the handheld into a on-the-go retro party console.

Overall very pleased with my purchase, it's small enough to fit a small handbag or a large pocket while retaining a screen size that is comfortable for 4:3 aspect game.
